Duncan Pollard serves as Director of the Conservation Practice & Policy Division for WWF International. The division is responsible for major program work with industries including water, energy, paper, timber, palm oil, and shipping. It also leads WWF’s policy work with the EU, UN institutions and the World Bank; and ensures that there are consistent approaches to WWF’s work across a diverse range of subjects such as oil & gas, finance, poverty & conservation, and bioenergy.

 



William Rees

Professor, University of British Columbia

William Rees, Ph.D., is a Professor in the School of Community and Regional Planning at the University of British Columbia (UBC). His teaching and research emphasize the public policy and planning implications of global environmental trends and the necessary ecological conditions for sustaining socioeconomic activity. Much of his work is in the realm of ecological economics and human ecology. He is best known for co-inventing the Ecological Footprint concept with then Ph.D. student Dr. Mathis Wackernagel.  Dr. Rees is a founding member and recent past-President of the Canadian Society for Ecological Economics. He is also a co-investigator in the Global Integrity Project, aimed at defining the ecological and political requirements for biodiversity preservation.

Scientific Director and Director of Sustainability, WWF Italy

Gianfranco Bologna is Scientific Director and Director of Sustainability at WWF Italy and Secretary General of the Fondazione Aurelio Peccei. He teaches management of natural resources and sustainable development at the School of Specialization, University of Camerino. He has written several books on nature and sustainable development and is curator of the Italian edition of the State of the World Report of the Worldwatch Institute. He has also served as a non-governmental expert for the Italian Government at the UN Conference on Environment and Development and the UN World Summit on Sustainable Development.



Nicky Chambers

Co-founder and Strategy Director, Best Foot Forward

Nicky Chambers is Co-founder and Strategy Director of the award winning consultancy Best Foot Forward. She holds a MSc in Environmental Technology from Imperial College, London and has worked in business sustainability for over 20 years including for the Confederation of British Industry and World Travel and Tourism Council.  She co-founded BFF in 1997 in response to the lack of user-relevant sustainability metrics. Since then BFF has developed and applied a diverse range of sustainability metrics and methodologies. As a founding member of GFN, BFF is particularly well known for its work with the Ecological Footprint as well as resource flow analysis, carbon footprinting and accounting, carbon risk assessment.  Nicky co- authored of Sharing Nature’s Interest with Mathis Wackernagel and Craig Simmons and has authored numerous reports and papers around sustainability metrics. 



Paolo Lombardi

Director, WWF International Mediterranean Programme

Paolo Lombardi graduated in Biology and worked as a researcher in fisheries and marine protected areas between 1982-85. In 1985, he joined WWF Italy where he lead the conservation programme. In 2000 Paolo became the Director of the WWF International Mediterranean Programme which currently includes projects in twelve East and South Mediterranean countries focusing on ecosystem based fisheries, marine and terrestrial protected areas networks, sustainable forest management, integrated water ecosystem management, climate change, building capacity of actors and creating policy and economic enabling conditions.

Dr. Hannes Kunz holds Masters degrees in Law and Economics from the University of Zurich, and a PhD in Economics from St. Gallen University. He worked as a senior manager in a number of industries and as a partner in international management consulting companies with assignments in Europe, the Americas and in Asia.  Today, Hannes is President of the Institute for Integrated Economic Research, an independent non-profit research institution founded in 2007. The key focus of the IIER is the integration of macroeconomic theory with resource-based views and the development of systemic views on human ecosystems.

Managing Director, Emirates Wildlife Society in association with WWF (EWS-WWF)

Razan Al Mubarak has been with EWS-WWF since its inception in 2001, establishing the local EWS office and its partnership with WWF. As Managing Director, she oversees all projects undertaken by EWS-WWF, leading on strategic engagement on sustainable development and implementation in accordance with WWF International policies and standards.  Razan is also a board member to Global Footprint Network, the African Wildlife Foundation, the Al Ain Wildlife Park and Resort in association with the San Diego Zoo, the Zayed Future Energy Prize and is the managing director of the Mohamed Bin Zayed Species Conservation Fund.

Senior Economic Policy Analyst, Sustainable Development Commission, UK

Dr. Tim Jenkins heads up the Sustainable Economics team at SDC. His research and publication record covers a range of sustainable development issues but in particular, the employment impacts of environmental policies, environmental taxation, innovation and technology transfer. Previously he was Policy Director of Friends of the Earth England, Wales and Northern Ireland. He is a founder Director of the Aldersgate Group, a UK coalition of progressive businesses, environmental groups and individuals making the case that economic prosperity depends on high environmental standards. His PhD examined the relationship between environmental regulations and innovation.

Claus Conzelmann is Vice President, Head of Safety, Health & Environmental Sustainability at Nestlé, the world’s leading nutrition, health and wellness group based in Vevey, Switzerland.  Claus has been driving Nestlé’s performance in workplace health & safety. He is a member of the World Economic Forum Project Board “Sustainability for Tomorrow’s Consumer”.  Joining Nestlé in 1991 he held various strategic and operational positions in Switzerland, Germany and Australia, incl. regulatory affairs, biotechnology policy, factory management, and operations improvement.  Claus has a Ph.D in molecular biology from Manchester University and had worked previously in the agro-biotech sector and as science journalist.

She is a board member of Global Footprint Network.



Randall Purcell

Senior Advisor for Climate Change, United Nations World Food Program

Randall Purcell is the Senior Advisor for Climate Change at the United Nations World Food Program. Randall joined WFP after 19 years at the World Bank where he was a Senior Rural Development Specialist working on agriculture and food security issues and projects. Between 2005 and 2008, Randall worked for the United Nations in Bangkok where he was Regional Technical Advisor for Land and Water covering 16 countries in South and East Asia and the Pacific. Prior to joining the World Bank, Randall worked as a Legislative Assistant in the US Congress and was the Executive Director of the Curry Foundation, a Washington think-tank focused on policy and leadership education on issues of international development. Randall has degrees in economics and international public policy from Columbia University and the Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies.

Haroldo Mattos de Lemos has been president of the Instituto Brasil PNUMA (Brazilian Committee for the United Nations Environment Programme), since 1991, and Professor of Environmental Engineering, Polytechnic School, Federal University of Rio de Janeiro, since 1978. Former Secretary for Environmental Affairs in the federal Ministry of Environment, Water Resources and Amazonia of Brazil from 1994 to1999, and State Secretary for Urban and Regional Development of the State of Rio de Janeiro, from1987 to 1991, he is currently President of the Technical Council of the Brazilian Association for Standardisation – ABNT and President of the Business Council for Environment of the Commercial Association of Rio de Janeiro.

During a trip to Zimbabwe in 1990, Ann Cotton realized that Africa would never conquer poverty and disease unless its women were educated. She launched CAMFED (Campaign for Female Education) in 1993. Selling baked goods, she raised enough money to send 32 girls to school and began working with groups of girls who encourage one another to stay in school, get jobs, start businesses and become leaders in their communities. Since 1993, 645, 400 children have benefited from Camfed’s education program across a network of 2,798 Schools. 5,132 young women have received business training and start-up grants to establish their own rural enterprises. 1,067 young women have been trained as community health activists.

Stefano Laporta is Deputy Commissioner of the Italian Institute for Environmental Protection and Research (ISPRA) in Rome, Italy. He holds a Law Degree and has a long standing experience in director level positions in Italian Public Administrations. He has extensive teaching experience in several Italian Universities (Lecce, Pavia, Milano) and in specialized training courses for local administrators in the topic of Civil Protection. He worked as certified “Disaster Manager” in flood and earthquakes emergencies in several Italian Regions and as Extraordinary Commissioner for Waste for the Latium Region.

Alejandro Litovsky is Director of the Pathways to Scale Program at Volans, which works with social innovators, business, investors and policy-makers, to create new forms of market intelligence that accelerates the transition to a more sustainable economy. He is a senior advisor to the Tällberg Foundation in Sweden.  Alejandro has worked as a strategy advisor for development investors such as the World Bank Group and the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC).



Dr. Juan Gonzalez-Valero

Head of Public Policy and Partnerships, Syngenta International AG

Juan Gonzalez-Valero, as the new head of Public Policy and Partnerships at Syngenta, develops and implements the company’s corporate public policy agenda. In this role, he envisions Syngenta going beyond corporate responsibility to the next level of building meaningful private-public partnerships and helping shape key global policy debates. He directs much of the company’s stakeholder outreach and speaks frequently in public forums. Previously, as head of corporate responsibility, he initiated programs to strengthen Syngenta’s contribution to addressing global challenges through its products and people. He holds a Ph.D. in Biology from the University of Hamburg where his research focused on marine ecology and environmental toxicology.

Robert Rapier works in the energy industry and writes about energy and the environment. He has worked on cellulosic ethanol, butanol production, oil refining, natural gas production, and gas-to-liquids (GTL). He s presently employed as the Chief Technology Officer for Merica International, a bioenergy holding company.  He has authored a number of articles on energy and sustainability, including a chapter on renewable diesel for “Biofuels, Solar and Wind as Renewable Energy Systems: Benefits and Risks.”

Peter A. Victor is a professor in Environmental Studies at York University and author of “Managing Without Growth”.  He was founding President of the Canadian Society for Ecological Economics and has served on the Ontario Government’s Advisory Committee on Transboundary Science, the Advisory Council of the Royal Canadian Institute for the Advancement of Science and the Advisory Committee on the National Accounts for Statistics Canada.



Martha Campbell

Martha Campbell, PhD teaches at the University of California, Berkeley. She founded the nonprofit Venture Strategies for Health and Development, which is working to reduce the tangible and intangible barriers preventing women from having access to options about their childbearing, and to strengthen understanding of the imperative of slowing population growth within a voluntary, human rights framework.  A political scientist, she has written widely on the sensitivities around the subject of population growth and the nature of conflicting perspectives in this area.

Cheryl Hicks is an experienced business and sustainability professional most recently working with leading multi-national companies on collaborative action projects for sustainable development with The World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD).  The WBCSD is a CEO-led global business association of over 200 multinational corporations with a shared commitment to sustainable development and business leadership for change. Since moving to Geneva in 2004, Cheryl has co-founded two professional networks of Geneva-based professionals working on sustainable development and corporate responsibility:  CSR Geneva (co-founded in 2005) and Sustainable Finance Geneva (co-founded in 2007).  Cheryl remains an active member of Geneva’s business community and community of international organizations.

Balazs Magyar, Assistant Vice President, joined Bank Sarasin & Co. Ltd in December 2000 as a freelancer of the Sarasin Sustainable Investment department. After graduating from the economics faculty of the University of Basel in summer 2005 (Master of Science in Business and Economics), he pursued his assistance activities to the Sustainable Investment team. Starting in September 2005 he supported the portfolio management and the sustainability research. Between 2006 and 2008 he worked as a Junior Portfolio manager and managed balanced and bond mandates for institutional and private clients. In June 2008 he joined the sustainability research team where he is responsible for the analysis of the sectors energies, public financial institutions and countries.

Simone Bastianoni is Associate Professor of Physical Chemistry and Full Professor of Environmental and Cultural Heritage Chemistry at the University of Siena. His research focuses are: application of thermodynamics to ecological systems, kinetic models for systems of environmental relevance and the use of sustainability indicators based on thermodynamics. He is member of the Editorial Board of the journal Ecosystems and Communities, and is referee for the journals Ecological Indicators, Ecological Modelling, Journal of Energy Research Technology, Acta Ecologica e Ecological Economics.

Alessandro works in the Research and Standards Department, contributing to research on the Ecological Footprint methodology and technical publications. His research focuses on the analysis of human dependence on natural resources and ecological services through the use of sustainability indicators and environmental accounting methods. Currently, he is working as a consultant with the EAD (Environment Agency Abu Dhabi) on the Al Basama Al Beeiya (Ecological Footprint) Initiative. Alessandro holds a Ph.D. in Chemical Sciences from the University of Siena in Italy.

Advisor, National Secretary of Planning and Development, Ecuador

Dania Quirola Suárez is a sustainability practitioner with a passion for the generation of integrated alternatives that bring together human, environmental, economic, and cultural dimensions by using community building methodologies and innovative learning. She currently acts as Environmental Senior Advisor to the Minister of Planning and Development in Environment in Ecuador and is studying the Ph.D. off Campus Program in Sustainability in Eramus University, The Netherlands. As part of her current duties she supports the National Footprint Initiative in Ecuador.

She achieved a degree in Economics for Sustainable Development at the Pontifical Catholic University of Ecuador, and she holds a Master of Science Degree in Environmental Management and Policies from the International Institute of Industrial Environmental Economics (IIIEE) at Lund University in Sweden.  She also did applied research in sustainability indicators for a leading Swedish energy company while in Sweden. Dania has more than ten years experience working with international, regional, and national organizations of the public and private sector; including The World Conservation Union (IUCN), the World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD) and Tourism and Leisure Advisory Services.

Sharon Ede works for a State government agency which seeks to increase resource efficiency, resource recovery and recycling in Adelaide, South Australia. She has been working on sustainability issues since 1993 and is currently an outreach volunteer for the Center for the Advancement of the Steady State Economy (CASSE) and Global Footprint Network. Prior to entering government, she spent five years working as a full time volunteer with Urban Ecology Australia, a nonprofit community group that promotes the development of ecological cities through education and example.

Donald G. Copper, LEED AP, has been a managing principal of GREC Architects since 2000; he has nearly thirty years of architectural design and management experience. He has developed and managed GREC’s collaborative design process, securing many of the firm’s successful architectural projects. He also helped cultivate the firm’s diverse roster of clients, as well as its growth in multiple market sectors.  Donald graduated from the Virginia Tech College of Architecture.
