Earth Overshoot Day was August 22, and Yes, We’re Still in Overshoot

It has been over a month since Earth Overshoot Day (August 22), the day marking when humanity exhausted nature’s budget for the year. We continue to draw down ecological assets at a rate faster than can be replenished and accumulating carbon dioxide in the atmosphere faster than can be sustainably absorbed.

The good news is that overshoot is receiving increasing attention. Earth Overshoot Day received extensive international media coverage. Read below for some of the highlights:

---------------------

Our three live Earth Overshoot Day chats on Twitter drew hundreds of participants from around the world. Stories on Earth Overshoot Day were featured in several of the big daily newspapers in Europe (such as Le Monde, La Stampa, and El Mundo), in languages including English, French, Spanish, Italian, German, Portuguese, Hungarian, Dutch, and Catalan. It was also covered on dozens of online news sources, environmental blogs, and a number of radio and television programs, including Swiss Public Radio (German), BBC Radio 5 Live, Hungarian Radio Class FM, and RTL (Belgium’s 2nd largest TV/Radio company).
