Public Comment Period Open on New Footprint Standards

The Ecological Footprint Standards Committee is inviting public comment on its proposed 2009 Ecological Footprint Standards. The standards are designed to ensure that Ecological Footprint assessments are produced consistently and according to community-proposed best-practices. These new methodological standards focus on Ecological Footprint studies for organizations and products. They were created over the past six months by the Ecological Footprint Standards Committee and the Standards Working Group.

The Committee’s work follows the Charter for Global Footprint Network Committees and the guidelines set forth by the International Social and Environmental Accreditation and Labeling Alliance (ISEAL).

We welcome business leaders and other interested parties to review the proposed standards and provide their feedback. Click here to review and comment on the document. I believe that in basis of positive interaction with nature must be urban ecology and ecological infrastructure. Urban ecology includes: 1. Ecological basis. Conditions of ecological equilibrium; 2. Resource basis. Problems of ecological footprint and urban vulnerability; 3. Biological basis. Problems of resilience of ecosystems; 4. Territorial-planning basis. Ecological framework and corridors; 5. Engineering - geological basis. Resilience of lithosphere; 6. Geographical basis. Resilience of landscapes and all components; 7. Engineering basis. Problems of ecological equilibrium restoration; 8. Industrial and transport basis. Problems of industrial removals, pollution and transport; 9. Hygienic basis. Problems of influence of environment on person; 10. Aesthetic basis. Problems of increase of aesthetic value of natural environment.

The major problem of positive interaction with nature is creation of the ecological framework of all big territories. The optimum ecological framework of big territory is the spatial cellular network covering all territory of country, region, large cities, which cells are large sites of nature.
On the second place must be architecturally - constructive ecology: it has tasks: Creation of ecologically beautiful and healthy urban environment, including environment inside buildings;  Study of features of interaction of natural environment and cities (including all kinds of human activity in cities) and development of ways of ecologization of this interaction in view of equal of environmental space, support of sustainable development of settlements; Sustainable designing and construction, support of ecological balance between cities and natural environment by help of ecological, urban, architectural, and building means; Increase of quality of life in cities and apartment houses by help of ecologization of life and activity of man in city, of ecological restoration of natural environment, phyto-melioration, and creation of attractive image of city, soft interaction of city with natural environment; Ecological optimization by help of sustainable architectural and building planning, design, technological decisions in view of exception of negative influences to environmental nature and restoration earlier broken environment, restoration of anthropogenic landscapes; Use of ecological buildings and structures, town-planning, architectural, constructive, technological decisions perceived by natural environment as the objects related to nature and included by it in ecosystem, which help to existence, to restoration of natural environment; Ecological reconstruction the earlier built cities, separate buildings and structures. Economy of all resources, their sustainable consumption, and use in the greater measure of renewal resources, reduction and exception waste, with the purpose of achievement of sustainable development at equal environmental space for all countries; Application of natural and similar to nature ecological materials, and ecologically admitted (ecologically allowed) waste of manufacture at manufacturing building materials and products with purpose of exception of waste in environment; Forecasting and estimation of possible negative consequences of construction, operation of new and reconstructing cities, buildings and structures for the environment; Timely exposure of objects, prejudicial to the environment, through ecological-economic monitoring, and acceptance of the appropriate decisions; Ecological certification of materials, products, buildings, structures, with the purpose of revealing them ecological compatibility for cities; Periodic analysis of movement of city to greater stability of development and to ecological compatibility by comparison of previous and current meanings of indicators of sustainable development.
On the third place must be new concept of ecological infrastructure: it is complex of natural resources, constructions and systems, providing support of environment of human life at all levels - from the whole country up to cities and to separate buildings and engineering constructions. It can be basis of guaranteeing of high quality life environment in future healthy cities. Ecological infrastructure includes interactive among themselves completely natural environment, quasi-natural cultural environment - cultural landscapes etc., artificial technical environment of cities, socio - psychological and socio - economic medium.
