Global Footprint Network has joined leading businesses, media organizations, cities and other non-profits in the US launch of Together, a campaign that gives consumers simple solutions and products to help fight climate change.

“Climate change is one of the most significant indicators of ecological overshoot, and curbing climate change is essential to creating a world where everyone can live well and live within the means of one planet,” said Mathis Wackernagel, Executive Director of Global Footprint Network. “The Together Campaign recognizes that while the scale of this challenge is enormous, all of us pulling together toward this common goal, making low-carbon choices in our home and work lives, can turn the tide towards a sustainable future. We are proud to be a part of this effort.”
Already successful in the UK, Together is an initiative of The Climate Group, a global non-profit organization that is dedicated to finding solutions to climate change. Together is based on the idea that if everyone takes small steps to save energy, its adds up to make a huge impact on climate change.
On its Web site, Together is calculating just how much of a difference people are making. Its tool the Togetherizer tracks the emission savings from the solutions people are implementing through the campaign, and adds them all together to calculate the total reduction in greenhouse gas emissions. In the first year of the UK Together campaign, consumers helped save 522,000 tonnes of CO2.
The US campaign kicked off with a press conference in New York City on June 5, World Environment Day. The press conference included California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger, UN Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon, New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg and Simran Sethi, an environmental correspondent for NBC. Together plans to launch additional campaigns in Australia, China and India soon.
