When and What is Earth Overshoot Day? Join the Live Tweet Chat with Global Footprint Network

Global Footprint Network - 08/08/2012 04:13 PM

We are approaching this year’s Earth Overshoot Day, the approximate date our demand for ecological resources and services exceeds the planet’s ability to provide for the year.

While we are not yet announcing the exact date of Earth Overshoot Day, Global Footprint Network will host a Tweet Chat on Twitter (@EndOvershoot) at 8:00 am, 1:00 pm, and 6:00 pm (all PST) on August 22 to discuss Ecological Overshoot: What it means and how the Ecological Footprint is calculated.

You can indicate your “attendance” on our Facebook Event page.

The Tweet Chat is similar to a webinar, but anybody can follow the conversation, share, and ask questions in real time. We hope you’ll join us for at least one of the chats.

On Twitter, we will be using the hashtag #OvershootDay and we encourage you to use it as well.

Earth Overshoot Day is a concept originally developed by Global Footprint Network partner and U.K. think tank, new economics foundation. Every day beyond that date we are essentially living beyond our means and running a deficit. We make up the deficit by depleting stocks of fish, trees and other resources, and by accumulating waste such as carbon dioxide in the atmosphere and oceans.

How to Participate:
• Join the conversation in the Tweet Chat room (http://tweetchat.com/room/OvershootDay) or directly on Twitter (@EndOvershoot) at 8:00 am, 1:00 pm, or 6:00 pm (PST). Ask questions and post comments.

• Help promote both the Tweet Chat and Overshoot Day on Twitter using the hashtags #OvershootDay.

• Share this page with your Facebook friends.

Global Footprint Network works with decision makers at all levels of society to create a critical mass of governments and institutions using the Ecological Footprint tool in order to reverse trends and help put an end to Ecological Overshoot.
