Global Footprint Network is seeking an experienced Office Manager to be based in the Global Footprint Network office located in Geneva, Switzerland. S/he will ensure the smooth functioning of the Global Footprint Network operations in Europe. The candidate will provide coordination and support functions for the Global Footprint Network team in Europe while effectively coordinating with the Brussels and Mediterranean Region offices. S/he will report to the VP of Operations, based in the head office in Oakland, USA.

Performance Profile

The main responsibilities of this position are as follows:

  1. Work closely with management and staff to implement administrative management policies

Global Footprint Network is seeking a highly motivated, detail-oriented, individual who will manage our internal finance and accounting operations including the monthly close cycle, financial reporting, and internal controls for headquarters in Oakland, California and two international offices. This person will produce consolidated reports based on activities in all branches and provide support for all programs and departments. This individual prepares reports for, and advises, the President, Management Team & Board in all finance matters. This position reports to the VP of Operations.

Performance Profile

  • Manage the financial resources of the organization including accounting, finance, organization-wide budgets, banking, payroll, accounts payable and receivable, general ledger and financial reporting in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles and organization/contract policies and procedures
  • Oversee staff bookkeeper in the Oakland branch and bookkeeping staff/personnel in other branches
  • Safeguard organization assets through the maintenance of proper controls, and ensures integrity in all financial transactions and accountancy matters, including audit systems
  • Formulate financial targets and annual budgets in accordance with the strategy determined by the President, Management Team and Board
  • Perform functions of Controller which is to maintain and safeguard the company's financial policies, schedules, rules and regulations, and makes sure that all departments are informed of and adhere to them
  • Manage cash flow, organization resources and policies regarding cash requirements, credit, and project commitments, and hiring plans
  • Prepare and supervise regular financial reports, and key management reports (such as the Cash Flow report) for all branches of the organization
  • Consolidate financial reports from all international branches and produce consolidated financial reports and narrative analysis for the President, Management Team and Board
  • Supervise preparation of the financial information in the company’s Annual Report, regular reports for management of ongoing projects, and intermittent reports for internal departments and external funders and clients;
  • Oversee implementation of correct accounting, cash management systems, audits and annual tax agency reporting, and ensure timely compliance on all annual/bi-annual filings required by government and statutory bodies in all offices, including international branches
  • Prepare for annual year-end audit process with external auditor and acts as primary liaison with all outside auditors and government agencies 
  • Provide financial planning and related ongoing advice for the President and Management Team to ensure fiscal literacy of decision makers
  • Success Criteria: The Management Team has timely financial reports, including consolidated financials, which serve as a cornerstone for effective governance and decision making. The organization’s audit report comes in with no changes requiring a “management letter.” The President, Management Team and Board are well informed of cash forecast and financial results, so that they can make the best decisions for the organization. The organization securely maintains its exempt status.

Department Functions to Oversee

  • Accounts Receivable – management, creation and tracking of invoices (FFS, travel reimbursement, marketing materials, subtenants); creating invoices in foreign currency in Excel; matching in US currency in Quick Books
  • Accounts Payable – management, processing of bills
  • Credit card – track and match receipts, code credit card statements for Job # and Program; post and reconcile statements
  • Vendor relations – finance related matters such as billing discrepancies. 
  • Deposits – receive payments, code checks with Fundraising department input, make deposits, post income on regular basis for bank accounts
  • Reporting – produce regular reports for hours, grants, budgets, Financial Statements for management and other items as needed
  • Purchasing – prepare accounting documentation for, review and approve purchase of items 
  • Banking – work with banks, including international accounts, on discrepancies, reporting and follow ups 
  • Audit Prep – prepare files and documentation for audits
  • Support VP of Operations – management review process, reconciliation, budgets, tax support, special needs
  • File management – keep clean, logical files for shared use.
  • Employees – help employees understand how their work impacts the financial health of the organization
  • Spreadsheets – prepare management spreadsheets as needed
  • Timesheets – monitor and report on staff timesheets for project management, staff management and payroll 
  • Fundraising - Assist with reporting for grant proposals.

Qualifications

  • Minimum of eight years  experience in accounting and finance; including general ledger, accounts payable and receivable, payroll, budget –forecasting general audits and financial analysis
  • Bachelor's or Master’s degree in Accounting or Finance
  • At least five years experience in non-profit accounting is required
  • Three years QuickBooks and Excel software experience 
  • Thorough knowledge of GAAP and double entry bookkeeping 
  • Experience working with international operations is highly desired
  • Familiarity with international banking and currency conversion for consolidated reports
  • Experience preparing executive level reports
  • Ability to perform meticulously with minimal supervision and ability to communicate well both verbally and in writing

Business Development Manager

Position Summary

Global Footprint Network recently identified unprecedented opportunities for growth in earned income and is seeking a Business Development (BD) Manager to take our efforts to a new level.  Earned income typically comes from projects, licensing, fees for service, and online products. The BD Manager will specifically focus on income from the finance industry and national governments. This position reports to the VP of External Affairs.

Performance Profile

  • Achieve the annual BD goal, the amount of which is currently $1.7 million;
  • Develop and revise annual BD plans in coordination with VP of External Affairs;
  • Manage and coordinate all project opportunities with executive staff, Regional Directors, the Research team, and other staff;  
  • Liaise with European, Asian, American, and Global teams on project opportunities in each region, and assist staff in developing proposals, cultivations, collateral, visits, and events that help move projects towards signed contracts, primarily in the finance industry and with national governments;
  • Manage the BD pipeline, across both the Oakland and Europe offices including monitoring quarterly outlook, proposal pipeline (closed won, lost, hot, open, dropped), and regional/owner goals to meet goals. 
  • Negotiate with potential clients various elements of each contract, including rates, deliverables, timelines, desired products, and responsibilities; 
  • Manage methods to increase revenues from existing clients, and attract new potential clients through research, networking, referrals, and entrepreneurial planning; 
  • Effectively communicate Global Footprint’s case for support, including composing correspondence to clients and strategic talking points for client meetings;
  • Maintain accurate information in our Salesforce database, including client records, tracking revenue, forecasting revenue projections, and producing reports; 
  • Maintain materials for project development (proposal templates and costing templates) for Global Footprint Network staff. 
  • Coordinate BD schedules; timely meetings with external clients; agendas, notes, and follow-ups; build ongoing positive relations with clients through timely email and phone contact; schedule internal BD meetings. 
  • Hand-off of sold projects to the Research team.
  • Assist with other revenue projects as assigned.

Qualifications

  • More than three years experience in business development, sales, contracts, project management, or negotiating, with a demonstrated track record of success with clients;
  • Experience with data sales to the finance industry and sales to governmentagencies is desired;
  • Excellent communication skills (written and verbal) and the ability to convey complex science or economic concepts in a clear, concise, and persuasive manner;
  • Demonstrated ability to identify new clients, and to cultivate and sustain positive relationships with existing clients;
  • Disciplined self starter, able to make excellent progress with work load; 
  • Highly energetic, entrepreneurial, and strategic-thinking with the ability to organize tasks for maximum efficiency and to meet tight deadlines;

Research Analyst

Research Analyst (Oakland)

Position Summary

Together with our partners, we coordinate research, develop methodological standards, and provide decision makers with robust resource accounts to help the human economy operate within the Earth's ecological limits.

At the Global Footprint Network, we are always interested in qualified candidates to join our outstanding Research Team. Currently, there are no staff openings in the Research Department, however, we welcome applications for future consideration.

The typical entry level position is a Research Analyst, who supports the maintenance and continuous improvement of the National Footprint Accounts. These accounts serve as the basis of our Ecological Footprint analyses worldwide. The Research Analyst will learn to apply the accounts in projects with governments, businesses and other organizations.  In time, s/he will have opportunities to present on the Ecological Footprint method to clients and scientific communities, as well as on the outcome of specific research projects.

Some seasoned candidates may join the team as Research Scientists, however, these general qualifications would also apply.

The Research Analyst will be based in Oakland and work closely with members of the National Footprint Accounts team, project managers, and others working to help maintain and improve the accounts and to apply the Ecological Footprint. Application activities will require retrieving and analyzing data, generating graphs, contributing to and writing of reports and papers, some of which may be submitted for publication in scientific journals. Additionally, the Research Analyst will work closely with Global Footprint Network’s team members in Europe assisting them on Footprint applications through data, graphs and maps generation as well as report writing. 

The Research Analyst will report to the Director of the Research Department. 

Performance Profile

National Accounts (approximately 50%) 

  • Reviewing specific areas of scientific research, and incorporating findings into National Footprint Accounts calculation to improve the accuracy and relevance of the metric. 
  • Collaborating with research partners such as government agencies, academic institutions, and NGOs to validate and improve the data in the accounts and the calculation methodology, and to develop needed scientific information not otherwise available. 
  • Contributing to programming of the National Footprint Accounts, and to supporting and applying quality assurance procedures. 


Applications (approximately 50%)

  • Developing and refining approaches for applying the Ecological Footprint in a wide variety of contexts. 
  • Contributing to projects focusing on application of the Ecological Footprint by generating graphs and maps, retrieving data and by analyzing trends. 
  • Contributing to and writing of reports and other documentation that serve as project deliverables
  • Providing summaries and interpretations of Footprint data for Global Footprint Network internal use, as well as for clients, partners, and the general public. 
  • Collaborating with the Global Footprint Network team members in Europe.
  • Supporting the communications department in its use of Footprint concepts and data.

Qualifications

The successful candidate will have the following qualifications, skills and experience:

Education

  • Master’s degree or a Bachelor’s degree with at least one year of research experience in a relevant field, such as environmental science, environmental or natural resource management, statistics or ecological economics.

Experience

  • Ability to analyze and manipulate large data sets in Excel and MySQL. Proficiency in Excel VBA and/or MATLAB is desirable.  Additionally, C#, GAMS, Python (GIS), Statistics (R and STATA) or CGE modeling experience would be useful.
  • Interest in global resource issues and sustainability practice. 
  • Excitement about being part of a small but growing organization whose influence on global movement toward sustainability is rapidly expanding.
  • Ability to work well in a highly interactive team environment and across different time zones.
  • Well-organized, self-motivated, and able to meet project deadlines. 
  • Skilled in both technical writing and oral communications. 
  • Good interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work with individuals from a wide variety of backgrounds and cultures. 
  • Experience with assessments in fisheries, grazing or livestock a plus.

Travel

This position is based in Oakland, CA (USA) and requires interactions with Global Footprint Network’s team members in Geneva (Switzerland). Occasional travel may be undertaken to attend meetings, conferences, events, and for project scoping and development.

Qualifications
Recent graduates with a degree in communications, public relations, marketing, or related field as well as advanced undergraduate students are encouraged to apply. Degrees in the environment or natural resources, with strong writing and communications experience would also be considered.  Depending on skills and interests, intern projects may include:

  • Providing research to support targeted outreach to our key stakeholders;
  • Assisting with website maintenance, newsletters, and media outreach;

Global Footprint Network is seeking interns to assist its Research team. The Department of Research & Standards within Global Footprint Network strives towards the continuous improvement of the science of the Ecological Footprint and develops projects rigorously grounded in its methodology.

Recent graduates with a degree in Environmental Policy, Forestry, Environmental Science, Climatology, Computer Science, Engineering, Earth Science, Agriculture, Aquaculture, Biology, Ecology, Urban Planning, Resource Management, Geography or Business, or related fields are encouraged to apply. Advanced undergraduate students are also encouraged to apply.

We are seeking interns to perform specific tasks focused on the following:

  • Carbon Footprint analysis
  • Forest land use analysis (forestry research)
  • Grazing-land use analysis (livestock sustainability)

  • Spatial research on land use and primary productivity (ArcGIS and data sources)

Global Footprint Network is seeking an experienced Fundraising Manager to join our exciting team and to be responsible for maintaining and growing our fundraising programs.  The Fundraising Manager ensures that the day-to-day needs of the External Affairs Department are met and running smoothly. Reporting to the Vice President of External Affairs, the Fundraising Manager will also advise on new funding opportunities, revenue growth potential, and new products and services.

Performance Profile

  • Manage the foundation, project development, and major donor revenue programs, working closely with staff. 
  • Write grant proposals to a portfolio of funders, identify and research new funders, and assist staff on proposals to their portfolio of funders. 
  • Submit grant applications, reports, progress updates, letters of inquiry, etc.
  • Initiate contact with prospective funders and donors, arrange cultivation activities, and manage relationships with donors and foundation grant officers. 
  • Work with senior staff and Board Members to recruit, cultivate, and maintain relations with individual donors and prospective donors.
  • Assist Global Footprint Network staff in setting fundraising goals, and manage the pipeline of opportunities.
  • Oversee the management and maintenance of the fundraising database, and manage the introduction of new fundraising software applications.  
  • Manage and grow the annual direct mail/e-mail donor appeals.
  • Oversee periodic fundraising events, and coordinate small event teams.

  • Demonstrated success in securing funding for and scaling up an organization with a budget of $2 million+
  • Experience with earned income activities (licensing, consulting, project development, data sales, etc.)
  • Good relationships with foundation officers, major donors, corporate officers, and community foundations
  • Excellent interpersonal and presentation skills with the ability to attract funders and partners by communicating a compelling and inspired sense of purpose with high energy.
  • Excellent coalition building skills with an ability to communicate and work effectively with a variety of internal and external stakeholders; ability to tenaciously and persuasively negotiate funding agreements

Global Footprint Network is seeking an intern to assist with External Affairs, which consists of a range of fundraising and business development activities. Recent graduates with a degree in environmental policy and/or sciences, communications, public relations, sales, marketing, non-profit management, or related fields are encouraged to apply. Depending on skills and interests, intern projects may include:

  • Assisting with the preparation and submission of fundraising letters of inquiry, proposals, grant reports, and thank you letters;

Our internship positions are unpaid. We prefer full time interns, though a part-time arrangement may be possible. There is a minimum commitment of 16 hours per week for 12 weeks. Hours are flexible. Free healthy lunches are provided most days. School credit may be available depending on the requirements of your institution. This internship offers a unique opportunity to gain non-profit experience and be part of an innovative, meaningful, and fun organization.
