The Atlas explains the purpose behind Ecological Footprint Analysis, the research question it addresses, basic concepts and science underlying the Accounts, and the method used for calculating the results.

- Historical Country Data: The methodology used to calculate the Ecological Footprint of nations has changed since the Living Planet Report 2004. As a result, the calculations in the Living Planet Report 2006 and previous reports cannot be directly compared. This spreadsheet contains calculations for the data year 2001 and 2003 using the National Footprint Accounts 2006 methodology; the 2003 results are the same as those shown in Living Planet Report 2006. Countries with large changes that may be due to data anomalies are noted.
