Are you interested in a hands-on training course to understand the methodological and scientific basis of the Ecological Footprint? Do you want to learn how to calculate the Ecological Footprint of cities, regions, products and organizations?
Join Global Footprint Network at Footprint Forum: Meet the Winners of the 21st Century , in Colle di Val d’Elsa, Italy, just outside of Siena, Italy for a Technical Training Workshop on the Ecological Footprint.
Technical Training
Questa pagina non è stata tradotta in italiano. The technical two-day training is intended for practitioners who are interested in applying the Footprint in their own work. It is geared towards people with a technical or quantitative background and researchers working on Ecological Footprint projects.
Friday, June 11: 9:00 am – 5:00 pm, dinner at 8:00 pm
Saturday, June 12: 9:00 am – 3:00 pm
Background
The Ecological Footprint is an accounting tool that makes ecological limits understandable to governments, businesses, and the public. Footprint accounting compares a population’s demand on resources with nature’s ability to renew these resources and, by providing a common unit, helps businesses and governments to establish benchmarks, set quantitative targets and evaluate alternatives for future activities.
Who should attend?
The technical two-day training is intended for practitioners who are interested in applying the Footprint in their own work. It is geared towards people with a technical or quantitative background and researchers working on Ecological Footprint projects. The two day technical training course we have created for Footprint Forum 2010 is designed for people who want a firm understanding of Ecological Footprint methodology, including the mechanics of calculating the Footprint at the national, subnational and organizational level. This workshop is appropriate for professionals with natural science, technical and/or quantitative backgrounds. This includes managers in organizations, policy advisors and planners in government agencies and municipalities, consultants, research scientists, academic teachers, and students. If you are interested in better understanding the methodology, data, research limitations and advanced research applications of the Ecological Footprint on a national, regional and/or corporate level, this workshop is for you.
Outcomes:
Upon completion of the workshop, participants should be able to:
- Interpret and understand the National Ecological Footprint Accounts
- Understand the mechanics of conducting an Ecological Footprint analysis for regions, organizations and products.
Skills:
Participants will learn to:
- Effectively communicate the basic principles and science behind the Ecological Footprint to colleagues and the public
- Answer common questions about the appropriate use of the Ecological Footprint indicator
- Navigate and interpret the National Footprint Accounts datasets
- Utilize basic equations to calculate the Ecological Footprint of various raw materials and waste products, important steps for corporate and product Footprint work
- Design an Ecological Footprint analysis for a business or organization in light of common boundary issues and data limitations
- Apply a consumption-land use matrix approach to roughly calculate the Ecological Footprint of cities, regions, and personal consumption
- Use the Ecological Footprint Standards, developed by Global Footprint Network, to evaluate projects
Prerequisites:
Because this workshop is an advanced technical training in the Ecological Footprint methodology, it is assumed that participants will have a familiarity with the approach and basic scientific and quantitative skills.
