Bringing the Footprint to Southeast Asia

Philippines: The University of the Philippines School of Urban and Regional Planning, in conjunction with Kyushu University Faculty of Design, hosted the International Conference on Green Urbanism from Oct. 18-20 in Manila.

Speakers were invited to share their expertise on an array of topics from city design and green architecture, to infrastructure and transportation.  The audience of roughly 650, was comprised of local government leaders, national government representatives, academia, media and NGOs. “As crucial hubs of residences, infrastructures, and commercial industries, cities contribute greatly to any nation’s growth, but at the same time, put an enormous strain on the environment,” wrote Philippines President Benigno S. Aquino III, in a prepared statement to conference participants.  Among the speakers was Global Footprint Network’s Director of World Outreach and Media, Pati Poblete, who gave a presentation on Ecological Footprint for Cities. Pati also gave a presentation on the Ecological Footprint in the context of nations at the government-owned Development Academy of the Philippines, which was attended by representatives from the Office of the President, National Economic and Development Authority and various local government units.
