Our mission is to promote a sustainable economy by advancing the Ecological Footprint, a measurement tool that makes the reality of planetary limits relevant to decision-makers.

State of Denial, Wins Journalistic Award

Tom Knudson, author of State of Denial, a groundbreaking series that traces the resource flows needed to support the average Californian's lifestyle was presented the Global 2004 Reuters-IUCN Award for Excellence in Environmental Reporting at the Bangkok IUCN congress in November.

Knudson, an American reporter for The Sacramento Bee newspaper, contrasts environmental destruction in other countries with California's protection of its own environment. Building on the Ecological Footprint, Knudson connects these resources flows with the real people and ecosystems around the world that are impacted. The series invites all of us to consider the impacts of our lifestyles. As Rick Rodriguez, senior editor of The Sacramento Bee simply stated, everyone's "...choices make ripples around the world."
