Reducing the Footprint in the Retail Sector
Global Footprint Network has just launched, with partners EPA Victoria, The GPT Group (one of Australia's biggest property groups), and Lend Lease Retail, a calculator that uses the Footprint to help retailers to make better building design choices. An exciting example: GPT is now building a next generation shopping center called Rouse Hill with an Ecological Footprint 19% less than a conventional shopping center. GPT estimates that by using the calculator, its retail tenants can also reduce their construction and operationational Footprint by up to 40%.

Focus on Africa
Global Footprint Network and the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation have published a new factbook: "Africa's Ecological Footprint: Human Well-Being and Biological Capital." The creation of the factbook is the first step in a project exploring whether Ecological Footprint analysis applied in the African development context can lead to more successful human development strategies.

Footprint Forum 2006
In June, close to two hundred Ecological Footprint practitioners and supporters gathered in and around Siena, Italy for Footprint Forum 2006. The event, co-hosted by the University of Siena, marked the first public conference focused on the Ecological Footprint. It included the launch of the first Ecological Footprint Standards, one of the largest Ecological Footprint training session ever, and marked the first official gathering of Global Footprint Network partners.

In two days of invitation-only partner meetings, representatives from government, business, and non-profit partner organizations from twenty countries gathered to strategize about using the Ecological Footprint as a tool to end global overshoot. They also learned more about each other's work, participated in intense technical sessions, and discussed how the partner network could bring the Ecological Footprint to the next level of influence.
