Director, Research and Standards Department
We are currently seeking to hire an Associate Director to manage and facilitate the department activities, as well as guide and coordinate all worldwide technical initiatives. This is an exciting opportunity to spearhead the development of our core technical programs, its scientific development, and standardization of its use and application throughout the world. The ideal candidate will be a seasoned manager, skilled at building consensus within diverse scientific communities, and will have a proven track record of leadership during rapid growth.
Qualifications:
- 4 years work experience in consulting, government, business, research and/or management
- Advanced degree (Ph.D. or Masters) in related field, such as environmental science, environmental or natural resource management, ecological economics
- Proven success at leading teams and mentoring and developing staff
- Track record of successfully managing large projects
- Experience working with governments and/or corporations
- Interest in global resource issues
- Willingness to travel
- Fluency in European languages a plus
Responsibilities: This position works closely with the Executive Director to guide our technical programs, is responsible for creating strategic partnerships with governments, scientific organizations, companies, and consultancies, provides strategic oversight of our standards development process and fosters consensus building among staff and partners on methodological and research issues.
Specific responsibilities include:
- Manages all the activities of the research and standards department to support all the initiatives of the organization
- Supervises the development and implementation of the National Accounts Improvement Initiative, fosters an ambitious research agenda, and engages with the National Accounts Review Committee
- Directly leads or supervises the development and implementation of the Standards Initiative. Provides strategic oversight of our standards development process and fosters consensus building among staff and partners on methodological and research issues
- Leads the annual planning process for our technical programs and ensure the successful accomplishment of program goals
- Develops and supervises research collaborations with governments, academic institutions and partners
- Ensures the successful delivery of technical projects by supporting project managers in meeting goals, and by engaging directly with partners in high visibility or politically sensitive projects
- Works with the Development Director to secure funding for our technical programs
Travel: This job entails a modest amount of international travel.

Lead Scientist, Research and Standards Department
We are currently seeking to hire a Lead Scientist for the Research and Standards Department. This is an exciting “technical track” opportunity to spearhead the scientific development of our organizations core technology. The ideal candidate will become the organizations resident scientist, contributing technical expertise to research programs, projects, and outreach activities. The candidate should be an experienced scientific researcher with a broad background in the environmental sciences, skilled at working with diverse scientific communities, and skilled in communications with a diverse set of internal and external stakeholders. He or she will have a proven track record of scientific leadership.
Qualifications:
- Advanced degree (Ph.D. or Masters) in related field, such as environmental science, environmental or natural resource management, ecological economics
- Prior work experience in leadership positions in a related scientific or academic field highly desirable
- Proven success at leading teams and independent projects
- Demonstrated background in quantitative analysis, modeling, and computer programming
- Interest in global resource issues
- Willingness to travel
- Fluency in European languages a plus
Responsibilities: This scientist works closely with the Associate Director of the department and the Executive Director to recommend and implement updates and revisions to national and sub-national Ecological Footprint accounting methodologies, advise Global Footprint Network staff on technical projects and outreach campaigns, and provide external technical support to partners, academic institutions, and governments.
Specific responsibilities include:
- Leads and facilitates scientific research process for National Accounts Improvement initiative to assure continuous development of the organization’s core science
- Fosters an ambitious research agenda, and engages with the National Accounts Review Committee
- Publishes or oversees the publication of scientific articles, white papers, and other contributions to technical review forums or scientific journals
- Chief trainer and lead scientific contact for research collaborations with governments, academic institutions and partners
- Engages directly with partners, government agencies, multinational agencies, businesses, and other users or potential users of the EF technology, regarding scientific issues and development
- Acts as the primary internal and external worldwide scientific advisor for the Ecological Footprinting technology
- Conducts scientific and technical trainings for partners and external stakeholders
- Advises on projects related to City, Corporate, and Human Development initiative

Office Manager
Global Footprint Network is seeking an Office Manager to develop and improve our administrative systems so that we are well equipped to manage our continued growth. This position is critical to maintaining a service-oriented environment for clients, partners, and staff, and allows for significant career advancement. The Office Manager manages human resources and facilities, and creates systems and processes to encourage the smooth functioning of the office for all. The ideal candidate for this position has experience in human resources, facilities operations, and administrative management, and exhibits a high level of confidentiality, professionalism, and administrative skill. The Office Manager works closely with Global Footprint Network's Managing Director.

Responsibilities: As the Office Manager you will contribute significantly to our organization’s ability to achieve our mission by ensuring the smooth and efficient operation of our office and administrative systems. You will:
- Recruit and orient new employees and volunteers
- Work with the Managing Director to improve and manage our performance planning and evaluation process, ensuring that employees receive timely and constructive reviews that build their careers and enhance retention.
- Research, implement and administer employee benefit programs including 403(b) and health insurance plans
- Collaborate with the organizations’ directors to create and implement policies and procedures that improve the effectiveness of the organizations’ initiatives, programs, and departments

Internships
Global Footprint Network is currently seeking interns to assist in several departments. See below for descriptions of specific internship opportunities and information on how to apply to each.
Successful applicants for all positions will be motivated, responsible, and self-starters, able to work with minimum direction. Applicants should be interested in sustainability, global resource issues, ecological economics, and resource analysis. We are especially interested in applicants with backgrounds or experience in: ecology, environmental science, earth systems, urban planning, resource management, or business (especially current MBA students).
Interns will work closely with all staff, including experienced business consultants and Dr. Mathis Wackernagel, co-creator of the Ecological Footprint. All interns will also be asked to support the administrative functions of the organization. This may include arranging and supporting meetings, assisting with correspondence, updating the contact database, and overseeing production and mailing of materials.
Individuals who feel they can make a positive contribution to the Global Footprint Network by bringing a different combination of skills are also encouraged to apply.
Time and Compensation: We are now accepting applications for spring and summer interns. We prefer full time interns, though a part-time arrangement may be possible. There is a minimum commitment of 16 hours per week for three months. Hours are flexible. Gourmet healthy lunches are provided daily. We are willing to work with a university to arrange academic credit. At this time all internships are unpaid, volunteer positions.
Communications Intern
Global Footprint Network is seeking a communications intern to assist with a range of communications projects. Recent graduates with a degree in communications, public relations, marketing, or related field are encouraged to apply. Advanced undergraduate students are also encouraged to apply. Depending on skills and interests, intern projects may include:
- Maintaining and expanding the media library.
- Building network partnerships and supporting outreach programs.
- Assisting with website maintenance, monthly newsletters, and media outreach.
- Helping to maintain partner relationships.
- Writing and editing reports and project summaries.
- Planning special events and office parties.
- Monitoring Ecological Footprint and general environmental news alerts.
- Supporting the planning and coordinating of direct mail and annual appeal campaigns.

Technical Intern
We are seeking interns to assist with a range of technical and project work in our Research and Standards department. Current graduate, MBA, and advanced undergraduate students in fields such as Engineering, Environmental Science, Computer Science, or Mathematics are encouraged to apply. Depending on skills and interests, intern projects may include:
- Supporting Footprint projects with data gathering and analysis. These projects may support development of the Footprint methodology, or they may involve working with businesses and governments to help them move toward sustainability.
- Conducting technical and subject-based research for project work.
- Supporting the Ecological Footprint Standards process.
Key skills required for all projects include excellent writing, research, and organizational skills. For Footprint projects, strong quantitative abilities, solid computer skills and intermediate to advanced Excel skills are essential. Applicants should have a good grasp of environmental issues, and understanding principles of economics and basic statistics is very useful. For website related projects, knowledge of HTML or Dreamweaver are required in order to assist with website development and maintenance.

Fundraising Intern
Global Footprint Network is seeking an intern to assist with a range of fundraising activities. Recent graduates with a degree in environmental policy and/or sciences, communications, sales, marketing, or related fields are encouraged to apply. Advanced undergraduate students are also encouraged to apply. Depending on skills and interests, intern projects may include:
- Assisting with the preparation and submission of letters of inquiry, proposals, grant reports, and thank you letters;
- Helping to plan and organize special events;
- Participating in our mid-year and annual appeal campaigns;
- Helping to maintain donor relationships;
- Assisting with the maintenance and improvement of our grants pipeline, major donor prospect pipeline, and contact management database; and
- Researching and targeting individual and foundation donor prospects.
